Designer's Story
Born in Paris in 1927, Pierre Paulin (1927–2009) grew up influenced by his sculptor relative, cultivating a profound love for organic, sculptural forms early on. Initially trained in ceramics and stone carving, he pivoted to furniture design after an injury limited his fine art work.
Enrolling at Paris’s iconic design school post-WWII, Paulin pioneered soft, rounded seating that rejects rigid geometry, prioritizing body-wrapping comfort and bold modern materials. His breakthrough curved silhouettes revolutionized 1960s avant-garde furniture.
He earned prestigious commissions to furnish France’s Élysée Palace for two presidents, cementing his cultural impact. Throughout his 60-year career, Paulin blurred the line between furniture and art, crafting playful, fluid shapes that inspire our Bubble series today.
