Hugo de Ruiter (1959– ) is a forward-thinking Dutch industrial furniture designer, globally celebrated for his "(E)motion" design ethos and game-changing rotating upholstery mechanics. Trained in industrial design in the Netherlands, he founded his independent design studio focused on furniture that moves and responds to human daily routines. His landmark partnership with Swiss leather brand De Sede began in 2003.
Starting in 2003, de Ruiter collaborated closely with De Sede to craft upholstery that balances sculptural biomorphic forms and usable mobility. After testing flexible foam composites and silent swivel metal hardware, he engineered fully 360° rotating backrests that remove rigid sofa orientation constraints.
