Designer's Story
Flemming Lassen (1902 – 1984) was a pivotal Danish Modernist architect and designer, a leading figure in introducing functionalism to Denmark. Born in Copenhagen into an artistic family—his father a decorative painter, mother a painter—he and his brother Mogens (also an architect) developed an early passion for architecture. Lassen trained as a mason before studying at Copenhagen’s Technical School.
He met Arne Jacobsen at boarding school, forming a lifelong creative partnership. In 1929, they won the Danish Architects Association competition for the House of the Future, a futuristic spiral glass-and-concrete residence that brought them international fame. In the 1930s, they co-founded a design studio, later completing iconic works like Søllerød Town Hall (1942).
Lassen’s solo career focused on libraries and cultural centers—such as Nyborg Library (1940), which earned him the Eckersberg Medal. His furniture designs, including the The Tired Man chair (1935) and My Own Chair (1938), are celebrated for organic curves, comfort, and timeless minimalism, becoming highly sought-after collector’s pieces.
