Hans Wegner

Hans Wegner (1914–2007) was an iconic Danish furniture luminary, hailed as the "Master of Chairs" for merging functional craft and sculptural modernism. Born in Tønder to a shoemaker, he trained as a cabinetmaker before studying at Copenhagen’s School of Arts and Crafts, opening his independent design studio in 1943.

In 1938, Wegner collaborated with Arne Jacobsen on civic furniture, mastering solid wood joinery before experimenting with steel tubing to honor early modernists Le Corbusier and Marcel Breuer. His beach holiday sand-sculpture seat concept birthed his groundbreaking 1950 Flag Halyard (PP225) lounge chair, a radical hybrid of industrial metal, nautical linen rope and plush sheepskin.

The design earned the Bo Bedre Classics Award upon its 2002 reissue by PP Møbler. A lifelong champion of material honesty, Wegner crafted over 500 chair designs, cementing his legacy as the defining voice of Danish mid-century design.
