Designer's Story

Gaetano Pesce

Gaetano Pesce (1939–2024) was an iconic Italian radical designer, architect and artist celebrated for weaving social critique, experimental material technology and organic sculptural forms into every furnishing creation. Educated in architectural design in Venice, he aligned with Italy’s anti-design Radical Design movement of the late 1960s, rejecting sterile purely functional mainstream furniture.
Driven by emerging flexible polyurethane foam technology and the era’s rising feminist movements, Pesce spent years refining vacuum-compressible monoblock foam seating that expands into full shape after unpacking. He conceived the anthropomorphic Up series to merge soft nurturing curves with quiet social metaphor, developing the linked chair-and-sphere ottoman concept that would define the legendary Up5/Up6 set.
Officially unveiled in 1969 under the Up 2000 collection for Italian furniture house C&B Italia (later B&B Italia), the La Mamma Up 5 Up 6 Armchair—unframed single foam body, stretch jersey upholstery, cord-tethered spherical ottoman—rewrote the rules of expressive conceptual furniture. Its provocative symbolic silhouette remains one of the most exhibited and collected works of post-war avant-garde design worldwide. As a trailblazer of design as social art, Gaetano Pesce permanently reshaped how furniture carries cultural and political narrative.
