Patricia Urquiola

Patricia Urquiola (1961– ) is an acclaimed Spanish-Italian furniture designer, celebrated for reimagining traditional capitonné tufted upholstery with flexible modular seating systems. Born in Oviedo, Spain, she studied architecture and design at Madrid Polytechnic before relocating to Milan to pursue industrial design. She launched her independent design studio in 2001.

In 2005, Urquiola debuted her landmark collaboration with B&B Italia, reinterpreting classic Chesterfield tufting to create the revolutionary Tufty-Time collection. Experimenting with segmented foam blocks and split grid stitching, she pioneered fully reconfigurable upholstered lounge furniture without rigid fixed frames. The low-slung block-shaped Tufty-Time sectional blended vintage tufted craft with casual modern living, becoming a global contemporary design staple. A master of soft geometric forms and flexible living solutions, Urquiola’s modular sofa series redefined 21st-century residential lounge design.
