Designer's Story
Mario Marenco (1933 – 2019) was an Italian architect, product designer, and media personality, celebrated for his versatile and playful modernist style. Born in Foggia, he earned his architecture degree from the University of Naples in 1957. Between 1957 and 1960, he received five research awards while studying in Stockholm and Chicago, broadening his international design perspective.
In 1960, Marenco founded Studio DEGW in Rome, focusing on community and residential projects. The 1970s marked his breakthrough in furniture design, collaborating with iconic Italian brands such as Arflex, Artemide, B&B Italia, and Poltrona Frau. His Marenco sofa system (1970) and Marechiaro modular line (1976) for Arflex became classics, defined by clean lines, soft volumes, and modular flexibility.
Later, he designed exhibition stands for Fiat, Lancia, and Alfa Romeo, and created watches for Ferrari. Marenco also enjoyed fame as a comedian and TV host, infusing his designs with wit and warmth.
