Designer's Story
Henrik Thor-Larsen (born 1932, Roskilde, Denmark) is a celebrated Danish industrial designer and inventor, best known for his iconic Ovalia Egg Chair (1968). Originally training as a graphic designer with a four‑year apprenticeship, he earned top marks before working in Denmark, Norway, and Switzerland.
In the 1950s, he turned to automotive design, building a well‑received plastic sports car on a Porsche chassis in Stockholm. Spotted by Saab, he designed seats for the Saab Sonett, which led him to focus on furniture and industrial design.
His breakthrough came in 1968 with the Ovalia, a futuristic, egg‑shaped easy chair with a swivel base, unveiled at the Scandinavian Furniture Fair. It became an instant classic, produced until 1978 and reissued today for its timeless, organic modern style. A pioneer of Danish modern design, Thor-Larsen’s work blends sculptural form, comfort, and innovation.
