Paulo Mendes da Rocha

Paulo Mendes da Rocha (1928–2024) was a celebrated Brazilian architect and designer, a leading figure of the São Paulo School of Architecture.

In 1957, at age 29, he designed the Paulistano chair to furnish the Athletic Club of São Paulo, a building he also designed.

His work emphasized robust materials, clean structural lines, and functional simplicity.

Awarded the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2006, his creations—including the Paulistano chair—are globally recognized for blending artistic vision with practicality, leaving a lasting impact on modern design.
