Designer's Story
Ubald Klug (born 1932, St. Gallen, Switzerland) is a distinguished Swiss interior architect and industrial designer, celebrated for his sculptural forms and functional artistry. He trained in interior design at the Zurich School of Applied Arts (1952–1955) under Willy Guhl, then worked in Zurich and Helsinki, honing his architectural sensibility.
In 1958 Klug moved to Paris, collaborating with sculptor François Stahly and attending Jean Prouvé’s lectures, which deepened his respect for material innovation. After serving as technical director at a Swiss sanitaryware firm, he settled permanently in Paris in 1966, later founding his independent studio in 1972.
Renowned for the iconic 1973 Terrazza sofa (for De Sede)—a modular, landscape-inspired seating system—he also created the award-winning Shell cabinet. His portfolio spans furniture, lighting, textiles, and interiors, earning honors including the Swiss Design Prize and iF Top Ten Award. Klug’s work blends Swiss precision with French artistic flair, defining timeless modern luxury.
