Designer's Story

Michel Ducaroy

Michel Ducaroy (1925–2009) was a visionary French furniture designer, celebrated for revolutionizing upholstered seating with foam-based construction. Born in Lyon into a family of furniture makers, he trained at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Lyon before joining the family business. He launched his independent career in 1952.

In 1954, Ducaroy began his legendary collaboration with Ligne Roset, becoming pivotal to the brand’s avant-garde transformation. Experimenting with polyurethane foam and quilted textiles, he pioneered frame-free seating. His 1968 Adria chair, an early modular all-foam design, paved the way for his magnum opus.

Unveiled in 1973, the Togo collection—low-slung, organic, and entirely foam-constructed—redefined modern comfort. Its signature quilted wave silhouette earned the René-Gabriel Prize and remains a bestseller. A master of soft, sculptural forms, Ducaroy left an indelible mark on 20th-century design.
